In the year 2000 the changing IT landscape was driven by technological
breakthroughs and large new and innovative projects with promise
of speed to market, improved customer service and cost savings.
When it came time for full implementation, 2001 came and went with
the technological promise becoming a more distant reality. In the
Surrex Solutions Corporation article of Nov. 30, 2001, "Strength
in the IT Sector Bucks Overall Market Trends," we quoted
from a conversation with Michele Cantara, senior analyst with Gartner
Dataquest. She stated : "Transformational Solutions are out and
Optimization Solutions are in."

Project Managers, Project Leads and IT professionals in general
must take heed that the top priority of Senior IT Management in
2002 is going to be effective and efficiently run projects with
quantifiable results related to expected optimization. In 2002,
business results associated with the overall project, or milestones
of the project, will need to be recognized in no more than 2 quarters.
The CIO's focus will be the linking of smaller projects through
shared resources to implement overall cost savings programs and
improved service delivery of the IT organization to both the external
and internal customer. To be assured the project you are involved
in is creating opportunity for you in 2002 and beyond, you must
be able to formulate a link between what you are accomplishing to
the overall strategic initiatives and goals of your company or the
external company you are involved in servicing. When seeking new
opportunities, internally or externally, do your research and understand
the most important company wide initiatives and tie your skills
and experience as a piece of the puzzle to successful implementation.
Bottom Line: The operative words for 2002 are "on time and within
budget" with high expectations for the quality of IT project delivery.
