The highly focused IT expert may be somewhat immune to the IT
downturn. Most CIO's and IT Managers we have recently talked to,
when asked what key attributes are they are looking for in their
IT staff, identify technical skills as being the key. Although many
projects are being scaled back and delayed until the second half
of the year, key IT technical skills are still in great demand.
For example, even with the recent downturn in IT spending, technology
experts in security systems are expected to be in high demand.

Recent studies published by an industry expert states that Project
Managers are also critical to the CIO's IT organization. A strong
technical Project Manager is the key to successful delivery and
implementation of complex projects. Recent tightening of IT budgets
makes scheduling and budgets even more critical.
The message to IT professionals is clear. While you can not control
economic factors, you can insulate yourself to the effects by keeping
your technical skills sharp through continuing education and on
the job training. Project Managers should stay abreast of the latest
project management methodologies and remain in a state of continual
training. Effective communications remains as a tool for career
